Achieving Greatness in West Central Indiana

Have you read the book “Good to Great” by James Collins? I find myself re-reading the context and my scribbles within the pages on a regular occasion. The highlighted notations remind me that great is hard. Passion is what fuels my will for greatness, but even passion can be tested. "When [what you are deeply passionate about, what you can be best in the world at and what drives your economic engine] come together, not only does your work move toward greatness, but so does your life. For, in the end, it is impossible to have a great life unless it is a meaningful life. And it is very difficult to have a meaningful life without meaningful work. Perhaps, then, you might gain that rare tranqu

The Dream and Growing Reality of RiverScape

If you had told me 15 years ago that the attitudes and culture of Wabash Valley residents regarding the Wabash River would completely change and that we would have complete and continued cooperation from local, state and federal elected officials to work towards that end, I would have been both encouraged and skeptical. As a member of the Terre Haute City Council and a long-time RiverSCAPE board member (as a city council liaison), I get excited when I witness incredible cooperation of true visionaries. As I look at our existing RiverSCAPE board today, I see not only representatives of business, banking, marketing, tourism, journalism, land development, Economic Development, University leader

New Rose-Hulman property offers many possibilities for college, community

Many of the recent questions I get as I am in meetings in Terre Haute or simply out in the community deal with Rose-Hulman acquiring the land across the street from campus. With this column, I thought I would try to provide some information about the land acquisition, Rose-Hulman’s potential use of the property and our planning process moving ahead. Let me try to provide some context or basic information before I start talking about the property. Rose-Hulman officially acquired the land October 31, 2017. The discussions that led to this transaction began with the Hulman Trust almost a year earlier, and turned out to be a relatively complex undertaking given the number of parcels involved and

The Terre Haute Chamber takes pride in member successes

BY KATIE SHANE Director of Member Engagement Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce As active members of the Terre Haute community, we, the staff of the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce consider ourselves lucky to be connected with so many different businesses throughout Terre Haute and the entire Wabash Valley. Our members are diverse, different and vast. We include businesses that bake homemade dog treats, ones that serve up chef created dishes each night, ones that load up trucks to drive all over the country and hundreds of others spanning different counties, industries and sizes. We admit, we thought we knew a lot about the community that we serve, live and work in, that is, until we had the pl

If not now, when?

It is often said the wheels of progress are slow to turn. This is a truth our community has come to realize. In our situation, the wheels of progress have been slower to turn than they have in nearby communities. It is also true that Terre Haute has a potential that surrounding communities should be envious of. Five institutions of higher education call Terre Haute or Vigo County home, a majority of them nationally recognized. Terre Haute's museums can compete with those of any city our size, as well as many cities much larger. A number of parks provide families or individuals opportunity for recreation. Terre Haute has a unique and fascinating history worth celebrating. Max Ehrmann, Theodor

At Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, community involvement is a way of life

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College was conceived in the hearts of religious women for whom the idea of community was and is a way of life. It is not surprising, therefore, that community is an important commitment for our institution and its employees. Even our strategic plan includes outreach to our neighbors! There are several ways that we are accomplishing our aim to be a true partner in our area. Local boards of trustees provide opportunities for us to share our talents and to serve. SMWC employees populate these leadership roles and they include United Way, the Swope, Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce, Art Spaces, Wabash Valley Community Foundation, Wabash Valley Educational Foundation, Hosp

Why invest of yourself here?

Although The Haute Initiative launched Jan. 2, the work behind it really started last year. Months of prep, design, development, production went into the project’s development, especially of the website. I still remember the puzzled question from more than one person with whom the project was shared: Why? As in, Why are you doing all this work? It’s not your job. What’s in it for you? Why are you putting work/time/money into it? So personal tunnel-vision/OCD aside, here’s my "why': It’s because I see our community as a good place to live - a place with great assets, that if more widely known, would allow other people to see our community as a good place to live. If we want to grow, develop,
